Crabgrass is an annual weed that grows from seeds produced last year. The most effective way to treat crabgrass is to prevent the seeds from germinating. That's why our first lawn care application is a granular fertilizer with a pre-emergent for crabgrass control. This helps the lawn grow and prevents the grassy weeds like crabgrass, quack grass, and barnyard grass.
Interesting Facts About Crabgrass
Crabgrass seeds are dormant for a short period of time after they shed from plants.
When the soil temperature at the surface reaches 55°F for four or five consecutive days, crabgrass begins to germinate.
Purplish seed heads form until frost kills the plants.
Plants that emerge early in the season and have a long period of vegetative growth are much larger and more competitive than plants that germinate late in the season.
Crabgrass Control Methods
Generally April and May is the ideal time to apply pre-emergents for crabgrass with pre-emergents in the fertilizer. The active ingredient for pre-emergent crabgrass control in fertilizer is prodiamine, and works best before the crabgrass has emerged. Crabgrass can also be treated with a post-emergent weed control product, something to know that with post-emergents is that even though the crabgrass is dead the plant won't disappear until after winter, because the roots of the crabgrass are no longer alive it also becomes easier to remove, and it isn't necessary to fully remove the ball of roots as you would with a living plant. If you would like to remove the plant after the crabgrass treatment has been applied, make sure to wait at least a few days after the application for it to be able to dry and take effect.
How To Get Rid Of Crabgrass The most effective way to get rid of crabgrass is to promote thick turfgrass to cover the ground. Vigorous root growth will help establish the lawn which will make it resistant against weeds. Often times changing mowing or watering patterns can help promote turfgrass growth. Granular fertilizers and liquid weed control applications will also help turfgrass dominate the lawn and prevent undesirable weeds. Spring Touch offers our customers a customized lawn care program. The program can use professional control methods, organic products, or a hybrid professional/organic approach. Note that the organic lawn care program does not provide weed control.
