The house centipede is typically a yellowish-grey centipede with up to 15 pairs of legs. Centipedes like to hide in dark corners, under rocks, or in decaying brush piles, and otherwise seek cool damp places to live. Centipedes can be found in basements and bathrooms which tend to be humid, and they are most likely found in the spring or in the fall when they are seeking food or shelter to overwinter. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, a house centipede may often be found, "darting across floors with very great speed, occasionally stopping suddenly and remaining absolutely motionless, presently to resume its rapid movements."
