House Centipede(Scutigera Coleoptrata)
The house centipede is typically a yellowish-grey centipede with up to 15 pairs of legs. Centipedes like to hide in dark corners, under rocks, or in decaying brush piles, and otherwise seek cool damp places to live. Centipedes can be found in basements and bathrooms which tend to be humid, and they are most likely found in the spring or in the fall when they are seeking food or shelter to overwinter. Centipedes can startle homeowners because they are surprisingly fast. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, a house centipede may often be found, "darting across floors with very great speed, occasionally stopping suddenly and remaining absolutely motionless, presently to resume its rapid movements."
Techniques to control house centipedes include using a dehumidifyer to dry up the areas where they thrive, sealing entrances to the home, and removing large indoor insect populations. Alternatively the centipede can be ignored as they are generally harmless to humans. The house centipede, like the spider can actually be beneficial to insect control in the home. Centipedes and millipedes are insectivores, killing and eating other insects and they are considered active hunters, constantly looking for its next prey. If centipedes are present there are usually other insects in the home to act as their food source.
